D2 Tool Steel

Description

D2 tool steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel known for its excellent wear resistance and toughness. It is widely used in various tooling applications.

Applications

D2 is commonly used in applications such as punches, dies, cutting tools, shear blades, thread rolling dies, and forming dies.

Blacksmith Applications

Blacksmiths often use D2 tool steel for making custom tools, blades, and various striking tools that require high hardness and wear resistance.

D2 Forging Temperature

Forging should be done between 1900°F to 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C), followed by slow cooling in a furnace or insulating material.

D2 Heat Treatment

D2 Annealing Temperature

Annealing is typically performed at 1600°F to 1650°F (871°C to 899°C) for a sufficient amount of time, followed by slow cooling in the furnace.

D2 Normalizing Temperature

Normalizing can be carried out at 1600°F to 1650°F (871°C to 899°C) for a proper soak time, followed by air cooling.

D2 Hardening Temperature

Hardening is achieved by heating the steel to 1750°F to 1850°F (954°C to 1010°C) and quenching in air, oil, or a suitable quenching medium.

D2 Tempering Temperature

Tempering should be performed between 350°F to 600°F (177°C to 316°C) to achieve the desired hardness and toughness.

Machinability

D2 tool steel has a machinability rating of 40, indicating that it can be machined with difficulty due to its high hardness and wear resistance. Carbide tooling and proper cutting parameters are recommended.

Weldability

D2 tool steel has poor weldability and is not recommended for welding. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are crucial if welding is necessary.
