S5 Shock-Resisting Tool Steel Steel
Description
S5 is a shock-resisting tool steel known for its excellent toughness and high impact resistance. It is commonly used in applications where the tool is subjected to heavy shock and impact loads.
Applications
S5 is widely used in the production of heavy-duty punches, chisels, hammers, shear blades, and other tools where exceptional toughness and resistance to breaking are crucial.
Blacksmith Applications
Blacksmiths commonly use S5 for forging tools such as hammers and anvils, as well as for making custom punches and chisels where exceptional toughness is required in order to withstand heavy impact.
S5 Forging Temperature
Forging should be done between 2000°F - 2200°F (1093°C - 1204°C) to achieve optimum results, followed by slow cooling in an insulating material or furnace.
S5 Heat Treatment
S5 Annealing Temperature
Annealing is typically performed at 1600°F (871°C) for a sufficient amount of time, followed by slow cooling in the furnace to relieve internal stresses.
S5 Normalizing Temperature
Normalizing can be carried out at 1725°F to 1825°F (941°C to 996°C) for a proper soak time, followed by air cooling.
S5 Hardening Temperature
Hardening is achieved by heating the steel in the range of 1500°F to 1600°F (816°C to 871°C) and then quenching in oil or air.
S5 Tempering Temperature
Tempering should be performed between 400°F to 1000°F (204°C to 538°C) to achieve the desired hardness and toughness.
Machinability
S5 tool steel has a machinability rating of 55-60, indicating good machinability with appropriate cutting tools and techniques.
Weldability
S5 tool steel has fair weldability. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are often required to minimize the risk of cracking and achieve desired properties.
